Earth was designed by Maxime Tardif, a pharmacist from Quebec City with a lifelong love of nature. His idea: a game where every player grows a living ecosystem — trees, flowers, terrains and the animals they attract — and where every card you play wakes up the ones around it. Its working title was Planeta Terra.

Inside Up Games, from Thunder Bay, Canada, brought it to Kickstarter in February 2022. It reached its goal in two hours and finished with 10,512 backers. Earth was released on Earth Day, 22 April 2023, and the first print run sold out almost at once.

Within a year it had won BoardGameGeek's Golden Geek for Medium Game of the Year, the International Gamers Award for solo play and the UK Games Expo's best board game, topped 71 reviewers' best-of-2023 lists, and was named the Dice Tower's Game of the Year.
